Self-Care In Support Of Your Mental Health: Setting Boundaries to Protect Your Self-Care Rituals
If you want to make self-care a regular part of your everyday routines, it is essential to become comfortable with setting boundaries. Strong boundaries are essential for protecting your self-care time from other aspects of life that want to leak over into the time you reserve for it.
For example, picture the following scenario: you just got home from work after an extremely hard day, when suddenly, your phone begins to ring. You answer the phone and discover that it is your neighbor asking if you would be able to mow her lawn for her today. You have mowed her lawn before, and you don't usually mind doing it, but today, you realize that you are feeling especially tired and looking forward to some self-care time to relax and restore yourself after a very long day at work.
As difficult as it may feel, this is a time to set a boundary by telling the neighbor you can’t mow her lawn today. You can offer to do it another time, but by setting the boundary that you can’t do it today, you protect your self-care time from being interrupted or taken away.
